Pregnancy Highlights: 13 weeks

Pregnancy Highlights
How Far Along: 13 weeks 3 days

Size of Baby Newsham: Our baby is now as big as a lemon or 3 in, 1.5 oz

source

Maternity Clothes: No maternity clothes yet, but I know that will change in just a few weeks.

Gender: This fact is unknown to us until March 26th when we have our ultrasound.

Names: I'm still not ready to share the our names yet. I will tell you the baby's name once we find out if we are having a boy or a girl.

Getting Ready: In preparation to give birth, I got two books from the library that I am excited to read! The first is "The Thinking Woman's Guide to a Better Birth" and the other one is called, "Ina May's Guide to Childbirth". I hope that these books will help Jon and I make an educated decision on the type of childbirth we want to have.

source

Movement: It have not felt our baby move, but Baby Newsham and I have been moving a lot!! Almost every day this week we have gone walking around campus for anywhere from 30 to 40 minutes. We've been walking like this for weeks in preparation for the Greater Longview Young Life 5K that I am going to walk in on March 24th!! I plan to continue to walk as much as I can throughout my pregnancy, because there are so many incredible benefits for both the me and the baby!!

source

Sleep: I am still going to bed very early. I think it was a record Wednesday night, because I was up until 10:00pm! I hope that as I continue on in my second trimester the fatigue will wear off. However, if the fatigue linger, I plan to listen to me body and continue to go to bed early as long as I need to do so.

What I Miss: Honestly, I miss our family. That's right...I am homesick. I miss our Newsham family and my Hubbell family. I miss our nephews and our nieces that will be here in April. It is hard to be so far away from everyone during this time. But don't worry, God is taking care of the three of us. The Lord has given us such an incredible church family that fills in those gaps when our real family cannot be here.

Best Moment of the Week: The best moment this week was at my second doctor's appointment when I got to hear our baby's heartbeat!! This is only the second time that I have ever hear our baby's heartbeat, but it was truly music to my ears. The baby's heart rate has slowed down a little, but the doctor said that is normal.

Food Cravings: As I told the doctor, I do not want chicken, because I would rather have beef or pork. I am also craving carbs, carbs, and more carbs. I want carbs of all shapes and sizes: bananas, strawberries, blackberries, baby carrots, green peppers, popcorn, crackers, and more!

Symptoms: The fatigue and frequent urination seem to be a given. However, now I cam feel my waste line slowly starting to expand!

Due Date: August 28, 2012

Next Dr. Appointment: Monday, March 26th, 2012 at 8:45am

Daddy: Jon continues to be wonderful! Daily God is teaching him what it looks like to be the spiritual head of our home. As a result, we have started a new Bible study called, Experiencing God! We are only in week one, but I am excited to spend time with Jon studying God's word before our little one arrives.

Taking On Something For Lent

source

On Monday, Jon and I began a new Bible study, just the two of us. We want to be able to grow and cultivate our relationship with God as a couple and we thought this would be a good way to do that. The Bible study that we will be going through over the next 13 weeks is called, “Experiencing God”. The authors of this Bible study waste no time preparing you, but they simply dive right into the truth of God’s word.

While reading Day 1, God showed me that I need to follow Him each and every day. I don’t need to be worried about tomorrow, but I need to look for what He wants to accomplish through my life today. He even confirmed this by sharing an encouraging verse with me from the Psalms.

“I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you and watch over you.”
– Psalm 32:8

Yesterday, Day 2, God taught me about learning to ask and pray the right questions. I am so busy asking God to show me His will for my life. However, in this Bible study the author explained that this is the wrong question to ask. We need to ask God, “What is your will?” When God shows us His will in scripture we can then take time to adjust our lives accordingly.

This morning is Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent. I am not catholic, but since I was in college I have given up various things for Lent. I have given up chocolate, sweets, TV, and more so that I could spend the 40 days leading up to Easter in prayer and focusing on God. This morning was no different. I had decided to give up movies and TV shows for the next 40 days.

I am so thankful that I have been listening to God a little bit better, because of what I have learned so far in our Bible study. Otherwise, I would have missed what God wanted to share with me this morning. God spoke to me this morning while I read a blog post by, Karen Ehman called, “Don’t Give Up Something For Lent”. In her blog post, Karen explains that in recent years she has stopped giving up things for Lent. Instead, she takes on something for Lent, like serving in a soup kitchen once a week or taking a hurting soul out for coffee every Saturday.

What an incredible idea!!

In my heart, I know that even though this is not a part of my plan for Lent, it is what God wants me to focus on doing for the next 40 days. God has shown me His will for me during Lent and I am taking time to adjust my life accordingly.

I have decided to take on writing a note of encouragement or thanks to someone each day of Lent. Yes, that is 40 notes in 40 days. I am looking forward to giving up my time to encourage and pray for the people that I am writing notes to. I am so excited about what God is going to do in my heart during the next 40 days of Lent while I take time to focus on others around me!

Weight Watchers and My Pregnancy

source

This blog post has been in the works for a while. I knew that I would need to write a post about this, but honestly I have not been able to organize my thoughts until now.

A few weeks ago I wrote a blog post called, Pregnancy Highlights: 11 weeks. Helen left me a comment on that blog post that I have thinking about ever since. Helen's comment said, “Do you think you could do a post on how pregnancy and WW work together? I know you cannot officially follow the plan when pregnant, but maybe you could also explain the rules - like what if you are LT, then become pregnant, how does payment work after baby until you get back to goal?” Today, I want to focus on the first question in Helen's comment and come back to the other ones another time.

. . . . . . . . . .
Before I begin, I want to make it very clear that what I am going to write is my opinion. It is NOT the opinion of Weight Watchers or anyone else. I am writing from my own personal perspective and opinion. I am not a professional nutritionist, just a woman trying to lead the healthiest lifestyle possible while I am pregnant.

With that being said, I think I should share with you that OFFICIALLY you cannot follow the Weight Watchers program while you are pregnant. A portion of the Weight Watchers health notice states, "Weight Watchers prohibits participation in its weight loss plan for children under the age of 10, those individuals with an active medical diagnosis of bulimia nervosa, those whose weight is less than 5 pounds above the minimum weight of the Weight Watchers Weight Ranges, and during pregnancy." To read the entire Weight Watchers health notice, please click here.
. . . . . . . . . .

All of that being said, for the last 12 weeks of my pregnancy, I have still been following Weight Watchers. Over the last 3 years, I have faithfully followed the Weight Watchers program and it is a way of life for me. I've tracked my PointsPlus each day for years, even as a Lifetime member. I knew that one day I would get pregnant and I would continue to follow the Weight Watchers program.

I have still tracked my PointsPlus each day or my pregnancy. Right now, it is early in my pregnancy and I do not need to gain very much weight. So, I have continued to eat the same amount of PointsPlus values that I did when I was trying to maintain my weight as a lifetime member. I have gained weight during this time, because of different cravings that I have experienced.

I know that in my second and third trimester, I am supposed to gain more weight and eat about 300 extra calories a day. I want to gain this weight for my baby. My plan is to add 300 calories worth of PointsPlus to my daily budget so that I will be gaining weight at a healthy rate.

I know that this is not "official", but this is what I've decided to do during my pregnancy to give my baby the best and healthiest start possible. Also, I am going to remain a Weight Watchers leader throughout my pregnancy. I want to continue to be a good example to my members as they learn to lead a healthier lifestyle.

Personally, I wish that Weight Watchers had a program for pregnant woman, especially considering that they are not a "diet", but they do not offer anything like that at this time. So, I am going to apply the principles that I have learned about healthy eating throughout my pregnancy.

Many of the articles that I have read from What to Expect and Baby Center want me to eat the same foods that Weight Watchers has encouraged me to eat. I've already been leading a healthy lifestyle, I am just going to continue to do it while I am pregnant.

Pregnancy Highlights: 12 weeks

Pregnancy Highlights
How Far Along: 12 weeks 3 days

Size of Baby Newsham: Our baby is as big as a peach or 3in long.

source

Maternity Clothes: No maternity clothes yet, but when my stomach is full my smaller jeans feel tight.

Gender: Even though our baby's gender has already been decided we won't find out until sometime in late March or early April.

Names: I'm still not ready to share the our names yet, because we have not come to a decision on middle names.

Getting Ready: This month, Jon and I are going to try as reevaluate our budget, so that we can begin planning for our little one's arrival. We are going to have some added expenses in these next coming months and are praying that God will continue to provide for us as He always does!

Movement: Apparently, our baby is developing reflexes this week which is cool! My email update from BabyCenter said that if I poke my stomach our baby will move in response. I still cannot feel those movements, but I am looking forward to the day that I do!

Sleep: I am still sleeping a lot, but I am looking forward to getting some of my energy back in my second trimester!

What I Miss: I miss having enough energy to keep my house clean, make dinner, and spend time with Jon. It's been so frustrating that I do not have energy to do the laundry and other things like that. However, I am trying to lower my expectations and simply focus on taking care of myself and our baby.

Best Moment of the Week: The best moment this week was when I read Baby Newsham his/her very first Elephant and Piggie book!! Normally, I go walking on my lunch break, but the weather this week has been cold and rainy. So, one day while I was inside eating my lunch, I was inspired to read, "I Am Invited to a Party" to our baby. This is the only Elephant and Piggie book that I have in my office, but don't worry it will be the first of MANY that our baby will hear on a regular basis!!

source

Food Cravings: Right now, I am craving cheese, specifically cheddar. I want white cheddar flavored chips and rice cakes. I also want cheddar cheese and crackers. I cannot seem to get enough of it.

source

Symptoms: The two most obvious pregnancy symptoms I have are extreme fatigue and frequently need to run to the bathroom. I get up at least once a night to go pee, which is annoying, but I cannot help it.

Due Date: August 28, 2012

Next Dr. Appointment: Monday, February 20, 2012 at 9:45am

Daddy: Jon is great! Earlier this week, Jon asked me if we could set aside time together each day, so that we can pray for our baby. We've been praying for our baby on our own, but I am looking forward to praying for our child together!

Our Valentine's Day Date

I always seem to be planning our date nights on a budget and Valentine's Day is no exception. Whenever I need great inexpensive date ideas, I turn to The Dating Divas. My friend, Elise, told me about this blog over a year ago and I have been a faithful follower ever since!!

I found this date idea on The Dating Divas website, called "Help Your Husband Plan a Date". Immediately, I thought that this might be a great option for us, because I always want Jon to plan dates, but the truth is that I am the natural planner in our family.

As it turned out, this date idea was perfect for Jon and I, because it allowed me to do all the planning. However, in fun and creative ways this date idea let Jon be the one to choose what we would do on our date. Stephanie helped explain how to pull off this date in 5 easy steps. You can read more about that on her Help Husband Plan Date pdf.

My general plan for our Valentine’s Day date was for Jon and I to spend some quality time together by eating dinner at home, and going out to a movie and dessert. Based on Stephanie's pdf instructions, I broke down each part of our date into fun choices. I have listed those choices I came up with below.

Old or New – {APPETIZER} – Caesar Salad or Skinny Baked Mozzarella Sticks
Easy or Difficult – {MEAL AT HOME} – Broccoli Cheese Chicken or Thin Spaghetti with Alfredo Sauce
Fast or Slow – {ACTIVITY} – Cruising the Town or Movie
His or Hers – {MOVIE} – Safe House or The Vow
Loud or Quiet – {DESSERT LOCATION} – Applebee’s or Olive Garden
Small or Big – {DESSERT} – Applebee’s: Dessert Shooters or Chocolate Chip Cookie Sundae or Olive Garden: Dolcini or Warm Apple Crostata
Hard or Soft – {TYPE OF KISS} – French Kisses or Butterfly Kisses
Silly or Serious – {GIFT UNDER $5} – Something fun from Dollar Store or Small Box of Chocolates

In the days leading up to our date, I sent Jon text messages asking him to pick one, "Old or New". I did this with each of the fun choices on my list, until he had chosen everything that we would do on our Valentine's Day date! Jon ending up choosing old, difficult, slow, hers, quiet, small, hard, and serious. Some of his choices surprised me, but that just made our date that much more enjoyable!

Jon and I before we went to church, all dressed up for our Valentine's Day date.

We got home and ate pasta with Alfredo sauce.

Our friends Bryan & Tabitha gave us this for Valentine's day! They are so sweet and it was a great last minute addition to our date night!

Jon and I ready to go see our movie. Even though Jon picked "hers" I decided that we should go see Safe House instead of The Vow, which worked out great for us!

After the movie we headed to The Olive Garden for dessert. We ended up sharing the Smoked Mozzarella Fonduta and a Warm Apple Crostata.

This is a great idea date and I cannot wait to use it again!

Flashback Friday: Positive Pregnancy Tests

This morning I want to take you back to the day that Jon and I found out that I was pregnant!

The day before our anniversary, Friday, December 16, 2011, I had a feeling that I might be pregnant. So, I did some research about pregnancy tests online to find out which tests would be the most accurate. I did not want to stand by the pregnancy tests in Walmart for a long period of time, because what if someone saw me!? With an idea of what tests I wanted to get, I headed to Walmart and came out with a wide variety of pregnancy tests!

The next day on December 17, 2011, Jon and I celebrated our 5th wedding anniversary!! I was so excited and nervous about taking the pregnancy tests on our anniversary that I did not sleep very well. I hardly slept at all and woke up around 5:30am. I hurried to the bathroom to take a pregnancy test. I ended up taking three and they all came back POSITIVE!

Just as a side note, the digital pregnancy test was the best, because than there was no question about whether or not I was pregnant.

My positive pregnancy tests!!

On the same day that I bought the pregnancy tests I also came up with a creative way to announce my pregnancy to Jon. I got him these two baby outfits and a Father's Day card. In the card, I wrote Jon a note about how much Mommy and Baby love him! I also put the pregnancy tests in the envelope, so that he would see them all at once!!

Jon was slightly annoyed that I woke him up so early on a Saturday morning. However, he was overjoyed after he opened the card and found out that I was pregnant!!

Jon's Daddy-to-be Gift

After my Saturday morning Weight Watchers meeting, Jon and I decided to take pictures with my pregnancy tests. I wanted us to have plenty of pictures of us on our special day!!

Jon with the pregnancy tests.

Don't worry Jon's not pregnant, because that would be weird.

Me with the pregnancy tests.

Praise the Lord!! I'm pregnant!!

We're going to have a baby!!

We are in shock, can you tell?

This was the perfect Anniversary/Christmas present!!

source

Maternity Clothes: Not yet.

Gender: We will not know the gender of our baby for another 8 or 9 weeks.

Names: We have names picked out, but I am not ready to share them yet.

Getting Ready: At this time we are not working on getting anything ready for the baby. I am extremely tired and right now I am focusing on taking care of myself and our little one. We have plenty of time to get ready for our baby over the coming months, so I am not worried.

Movement: Our baby was moving around a lot on the ultrasound, but I cannot feel those movements yet.

Sleep: I sleep a lot! My sleep is often interrupted by at least one trip to the bathroom in the middle of the night. I have also been having very weird dreams! Last week, before the Super Bowl I had a dream that Jon and I were on a double date with Tom Brady and Gisele Bundchen!! Only Gisele was German not Brazilian, but overall we had a great time. So strange!!

What I Miss: The thing I miss most, is being able to eat chicken without it making me sick to my stomach. Normally, it is one of my favorite foods, but right now I don't even want to think about it.

Best Moment of the Week: The best moment of the week honesty had nothing to do with my pregnancy and everything to do with the New York Giants winning the Super Bowl!!

Symptoms: I am so tired. I do not understand how I could be so tired when all I do is get up, go to work, come home, and rest. I am trying to listen to my body and go to bed as early as I can. Hopefully, this extreme fatigue will subsides when my second trimester arrives.

Weight Gained: Maybe 2 pounds

Due Date: August 28, 2012

Next Dr. Appointment: Monday, February 20, 2012 at 9:45am

Daddy: Jon is the best!! I could not have asked for a better husband. I have been too tired to do a lot of the housework at home, but Jon has jumped right in to help me. He vacuums, does laundry, makes dinner, and washes the dishes. I am so thankful that Jon has been willing to help me during this time.

Baby Blogging

source

Thank you all so much for your encouraging comments, emails, and notes that you have been sending to me, since I made my BIG announcement!!

I have been looking forward to blogging about my baby for weeks!! I've been keeping my pregnancy a secret since before Christmas. It's been so hard to blog over the last few weeks, because a lot of the things on my mind have to do with my pregnancy and the baby. However, while it was a secret I could not blog about how I was really feeling.

I am so thankful that we waited to tell people until after I went to the doctor. However, now that we have received the go ahead from the doctor I am so excited to start blogging about my pregnancy!

I know that we have family and friends who do not live close to us, that want to know how my pregnancy is going. My plan, in the coming months is to give you weekly pregnancy highlights, which is an idea that I stole from my friend Kristen. You can find these pregnancy highlights here on our personal blog, Newsham Flight Log. I will not be posting pregnancy highlights on my weight loss blog, Living a Changed Life.

Our BIG Announcement

On Saturday, December 17th, 2011, the morning of our five year anniversary, I woke up extra early so that I could take a pregnancy test before I left for my Weight Watchers meeting. The tests results came back POSITIVE! I could not believe that I was really pregnant.

I hurried into our room and got together a special gift for Jon, because I wanted to announce our first pregnancy to him in a creative way. I finished my preparations and decided to go ahead and wake Jon up at 5:30am. At first, he was not happy about being woken up so early on a Saturday morning. However, his frustration soon changed to pure joy and excitement as he opened his present and saw the positive pregnancy tests!!

We told our immediate family about our baby on Christmas Eve. However, we decided not to tell anyone else about our little until after I went to the doctor.

On Monday, January 23rd, 2011, I had my first doctor's appointment. Jon was able to get off work to come with me. We had an ultrasound and heard our baby's heartbeat!! It was amazing!!

Since my doctor's appointment we decided to tell everyone about our baby. We have told our extended family, friends, work, church, and even Facebook. The only people left to tell are my bloggy friends and followers!

Next Tuesday, I will be 11 weeks pregnant, which means that my due date is August 28, 2012!! We are so excited about this little blessing that God has given us!!

Not the Same

source

This morning I read a Proverbs 31 devotional about how as you come into God's presence you will be transformed. I was reminded of the fact, that as I spend time with God in His word, in prayer, in worship, and even in silence I will be changed!!

Every Wednesday night after work, I go to church for choir practice. Please do not be deceived when I say this, because I am not the world's best singer. However, I love singing praises to my God! I joined choir, because of the way God has used music and worship to change me. It isn't something I expected, but as I spend time worshiping God, I cannot help but be changed by Him!

Last night in choir, we sang one of my favorite songs called, "Unto the Lamb". Honestly, I do not know how anyone could hear this song and not be moved by the music and lyrics, because it is so powerful! My favorite line in this song is, "All praise unto the Lamb who sits on the throne, Honor and power, dominion and praise, Unto the Lamb, who was and is, and is to come!" Do you believe that those words are true!?

Choir is just one of the places where I come into God's presence on a weekly basis and experience God's transforming power in my life. Have you been spending transforming time with God? If not, I would encourage you to take time this week to come into God's presence!

This isn't my church, but if you have never heard this song, please take a moment to listen to "Unto the Lamb".

Not the Same
January 31, 2012
Lynn Cowell

“When the people of the land come before the LORD at the appointed feasts, whoever enters by the north gate to worship is to go out the south gate; and whoever enters by the south gate is to go out the north gate. No one is to return through the gate by which he entered, but each is to go out the opposite gate.” Ezekiel 46:9 (NIV 1984)

As soon as my eyes opened I knew it was going to be one of “those” days. I think that saying, “If mama ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy” was created for days like this. I was sad, disappointed, frustrated and empty.

But I couldn’t put my finger on why I felt all of these emotions. I just knew I had to get out of the house before everyone woke up and my feelings steered our day in the wrong direction.

I put on my tennis shoes and started out the front door. Though unsure of where I was going to run, I was certain of the length: far! Far enough for me to come back with a different perspective. What I needed was to get alone with Jesus, to have Him fill me, and exchange my negative emotions with His peace, truth and life.

As I started my run, old thoughts poured into my head. You are not beautiful. You are not special. Your life doesn’t count. After years of reading, studying and even teaching the Truth, it was hard to believe I still struggled with these dark thoughts.

As lies poured in, I remember scriptures stored in my mind and heart. He sees me as beautiful. He says He is wild about me. He is more than enough for me. He is all I need.

Mulling over these precious promises from God’s Word, tears began to pour. This is what I needed.

I didn’t need more words of affirmation from my husband. I didn’t need another pat on the back from a friend. I needed a new outpouring of love from my Love. I needed to be reminded of who He says I am, to give up the old lies and replace them with His Truths.

When we come into God’s presence, He fills us. The Lord changes us so that we are not the same as we were when we came to Him. Ezekiel 46:9 represents this exchange of old for new. The people of Israel were told when they came into the temple area to worship, they were to enter through one gate and exit through the opposite gate.

So the same should be true with us; we are “not to go back as we came, but more holy, and heavenly, and spiritual” (Matthew Henry). As we enter into our special times with God, we need to come out the “opposite gate,” different than the way we went in.

After an hour of running, crying and talking to God, I was not the same when I returned home. Now, I was ready. Ready to be the wife and mom my family needed. Restored into a vessel that God could use. Being with Jesus had changed me.

Dear Lord, I need You today. Living this life sometimes drains me and leaves me empty. As I come through Your gates and into Your presence, change me. Pour Your life and heart into me so that as I leave through the “opposite gate,” I am not the same woman as when I came in. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
