Jon's Final Semester

Jon isn’t much of a blogger, so here is an update on what he is doing.

Jon is two weeks into his final semester at LeTourneau University. He will finish his undergraduate degree in May of this year. I am so proud of him. He has worked so hard to get to this point. He is taking his final 6 hours in Bible this semester and working. Jon works primarily as a Flight Instructor for LeTourneau University and occasionally works at the Olive Garden as a Server.

I don't know how he does it all, but he does. He is not as busy this semester, as he has been in the past which is great. I love spending time with him. I look forward to May when I can post a graduation blog for him. What fun!

Earthquake Leaves Haiti Devestated

Haiti holds an indescribable place in my heart. This is because I know and love Michelle McMartin, my best friend. Jon and I were able to go with Michelle to visit her parents, Bruce and Cindy in Haiti in December 2005. Last night on my way home I heard about the 7.0 magnitude earthquake that hit Haiti around 4pm. I called Michelle immediately to find out if she knew whether or not her parents were alive. Later that evening I received a phone call from her telling me that they were safe, but that the city of Port-au-Prince is in shambles.

Then, this morning I just got to work and I turned on KLOVE, because I knew that they would be talking about Haiti. Then they read a letter from Cindy McMartin (Michelle's Mom), that I have copied from The Morning Shows blog and posted here for you to read.

Please read this field report from Cindy McMartin and Phyllis Schmid at Bolosse in Port-au-Prince, Missonary Flights (

"This is Cindy and Phyllis writing to let you know that we are all safe here at Bolosse. We were hit hard, though. The Bible School building collapsed all over the attic and the office floors. Students were in classes. Bruce, David and a bunch of students are still working trying to get the last two students out; haven’t heard noises from them recently so we’re not sure they’re alive. We don’t have the equipment for this. We’ve heard horrible rumors of the damage around the city. Students are all up here sitting around on the lawns, will probably sleep here tonight all of us outside. I’m typing this without my glasses so can’t see to find periods and hyphens, etc. Just wanted to let someone know out there that we’re alive so that if you get calls you can respond. We’ll try to email family now, too. Telephones are out of course, we've turned off water, gas, electric, etc. It was a terrifying experience and I know there are many dead outside and around."

Please continue to pray for the McMartin's and Haiti as a country. As this moving letter describes they desperately need some hope in the midst of the devastation.

Uncle Jon and Aunt Jen

I am glad that there is nothing that suprises the Lord. He knew what this year had in store for us and I am so glad that we can trust Him. It is no small thing when I tell you that 2010 is staring with a vengance. If there was any thought in my mind that we were still lingering in the shadow of 2009, I was wrong. The year 2010 has come at us in the last 12 days to make her presence know to us. The most recent development in 2010 is that Jon and I are going to have a niece or nephew sometime later this year!

For those of you who are wondering here are some of the details. Last night I was just getting ready to walk out the door for my run when my youngest sister Vivian called me. She told me that she had something to tell me. "You're going to be an Aunt", she said. I couldn't believe it. I am going to be an Aunt!! This is not exaclty the news that I was expecting, however babies are blessings. Jon and I love Vivian and would do anything for her...anything. As the details roll in I will try to keep you updated.

Please pray that Vivian gets insurance soon so that she will be able to go to the doctor and recieve the proper prenatal care that she needs. She has been really sick, with morning sickness, so pray that the sickness will go away soon.

Praise Report: Lisa comes home!!

Thank you all so much for your prayers!! Lisa (my husband’s mom) was able to go home last night!! We are so grateful that the Lord was able to be with them all even though we couldn't. We have been truly blessed to have you all lifting up our family to the Lord. Please continue to keep them all in your prayers as they try to settle back into their daily routines. Thanks again.

Here is Dave's (Jon’s Dad) most recent update, for those of you who are interested.

Dear Ones,

PTL! Lisa got home from the hospital this morning. When we got back, the power was off. So, I was unable to write immediately.

The tests have all returned within normal levels and do not indicate more invasive tests. We are extremely thankful for this wonderful news. Dr Robinson said that the only way to be sure that the problem was related to the migraine medicine would be to hospitalize her and give her the drug under a controlled test. Considering the circumstances and the risk, we all agreed that this would not be a wise option. Some people have indicated a similar problem occurring during pre-menopause and others have suggested food reactions. We may not know the cause, but one thing is certain, we have truly sensed the Lord’s peace and presence during this trial and trust that He is at work in our lives.

It isn’t that late, but we are a bit tired and are about to go to bed. Lisa will try to get on email soon.

With grateful hearts and lots of love,

David, Lisa, Eva, Josh, and Hannah

Prayer Request for Lisa Newsham

We received a phone call and email from Jon’s family last night. Jon's Mom, Lisa, has been admitted to a hospital in Chengdu, China. Lisa saw her American doctor yesterday at his clinic and he is very concerned about her heart. They ran tests yesterday and will continue to do so for the next week. If Lisa does not get better by the end of the week then she may need to go to Thailand and be admitted to a hospital there.

Please pray especially for Jon's Dad, Dave, and his siblings, Eva, Josh, and Hannah who are in China. They were all quite shook up when we talked to them last night. This is bringing back bad memories from when Grandma Newsham was in the hospital before she passed away. Pray for Jon’s other sister Rachel who is flying back to Colorado this afternoon.

Pray for wisdom, peace, and God’s mercy. We know that the Lord is in control but we need his grace.

Christmas Vacation Highlights

Happy New Year!! It has been quite a Christmas vacation! If I tried to explain it in words it would take far too long, so instead I have decided to tell just the highlights and pictures.

1. Rachel flew into Dallas on our anniversary which was December 17th.

2. Rachel, Jon, and I began our drive on December 22nd to Virginia to spend Christmas with Kyle & Teresa. We drove through 7 states, changed time zones once, stopped for gas often, and ate a lot of junk food. Then we spent the night in a Wal-mart parking lot and made it to Virginia by the next morning on December 23rd.

3. On Christmas Eve, Kyle and Teresa took us to play frisbee golf, which is their favorite free pastime. Kyle was very good at frisbee golf and I am sure he has practiced it a lot. However he was patient to teach us how to play.

4. The next thing we did on Christmas Eve was that Kyle took us on a tour of his aircraft carrier the U.S.S. Carl Vinson. He took us all over the ship, even up to the flight deck. The flight deck was the best part except for the fact that it was freezing cold outside.

5. Lots and lots of yummy food. We had waffles, pancakes, Chinese food, ham, stuffing, cookies and ice cream, Kyle's homemade BBQ sauce, and much more.

6. Christmas Day. Food, presents, Mario Kart Racing on the Wii, watching movies and more.

7. Visiting Washington D.C.

8. Kyle's BBQ sauce with chicken

9. The car breaking down just outside of Monroe, La. We ended up staying in a Motel 6, because they could not fix our car until the next morning. Thanks for your help Dad!!

10. Watching LOST until we were dreaming about it.

11. Spending New Years Day with the Hall's and Maglott's.

12. Not having water in Married Student housing for over 24 hours. Praise the Lord that Papa John's delivers!!
