Let me start by saying that we are not worthy of the blessings that God has given us. When someone steps out in faith to be a tool for the Lord to bless us we are deeply humbled. The words “thank you” seem inadequate.
Last night we received a timely and unexpected blessing. As Jon and I drove home I began to think about all of the blessings that God has given us, big and small. There are a lot of them I can think of, but I’m sure that there are others that I have forgotten about. Tonight, I am going to the store to go grocery shopping and one of the items on my list is to buy a blessing book. Oh, you’ve never heard of that before? Me neither…I just made it up! : )
Jon and I feel very strongly that God has strategically placed people in our lives to support us as we prepare to go on the mission field. That being said, I do not want to forget the blessings that God has given us. I want to remember the people who have blessed us and how God has used them in our lives. Hence, the reason for a blessing book. As we record the blessings that the Lord has given to us it will serve as a reminder of the ways God has worked in our lives. I pray that we can be thankful and remember who has supported us and helped us get on the mission field. Also, when we get discouraged we can look at that book and praise the Lord for all the things that He has given us.
It is these blessing that serve as confirmation that we are in the Lord’s will. They are a source of encouragement for us to continue to stay the course and be faithful to the Lord.
As I was writing this blog, this hymns was playing in the back of my mind and I would like to share the words with you.
Count Your Blessings
Written By, Johnson Oatman
When upon life’s billows you are tempest tossed,
When you are discouraged, thinking all is lost,
Count your many blessings, name them one by one,
And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.
Count your blessings, name them one by one,
Count your blessings, see what God hath done!
Count your blessings, name them one by one,
And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.
Are you ever burdened with a load of care?
Does the cross seem heavy you are called to bear?
Count your many blessings, every doubt will fly,
And you will keep singing as the days go by.
When you look at others with their lands and gold,
Think that Christ has promised you His wealth untold;
Count your many blessings. Wealth can never buy
Your reward in heaven, nor your home on high.
So, amid the conflict whether great or small,
Do not be disheartened, God is over all;
Count your many blessings, angels will attend,
Help and comfort give you to your journey’s end.
